Teaching Parents to Support Infant Development Through Touch
The first year of a child’s life is one of the most important stages of human development. During this period, the nervous system rapidly matures, the musculoskeletal system forms, and the foundation for movement, coordination, and communication begins to develop.
Through my years of professional practice, I have become convinced that parents themselves can play a powerful role in supporting this development. This belief led me to create Sasha’s Massage Parents Training Program, a method designed to teach parents how to safely support their infant’s physical and neurological development through massage and guided exercises.
Why Parents Matter in Early Development
In many cases, infant massage is provided by a specialist. While professional therapy can be valuable, I believe that the most meaningful and consistent support a baby can receive comes from their own parents.
Massage and guided movement can do more than relax muscles. When performed regularly by parents, they help:
strengthen the emotional bond between parent and child
support healthy neurological development
improve body awareness and early motor skills
build parents’ confidence in caring for their child
The daily interaction between parent and baby creates something that even the best specialist cannot fully replicate.
My Professional Background
I received my professional training in massage therapy in Russia in 2008. After working in a clinical setting, I developed my own private practice focused on infant and early childhood massage.
Over the course of six years, approximately 450 children per year passed through my practice. I worked with infants as young as two months old up to children around two years of age.
This experience allowed me to observe patterns in infant development and understand the challenges many families face during the first year of life.
These experiences eventually inspired me to create a structured educational program specifically designed for parents.
What Makes My Program Different
Sasha’s Massage Parents Training Program is not simply a massage service. It is an educational process where parents actively learn how to work with their child’s body.
The program includes two consultations:
Session 1: Infant Massage
Parents learn the core techniques of infant massage. I demonstrate the movements, and the parents repeat them under my guidance.
Session 2: Developmental Exercises
The second session focuses on gentle exercises that support early motor development and coordination.
To help parents practice safely, I also use a silicone baby model to demonstrate techniques before they are applied to the child.
This approach allows parents to gain confidence before practicing directly with their baby.
Individualized Learning for Each Family
Every baby develops at their own pace. For that reason, my sessions are adapted to the specific needs of each child and family.
Rather than passive touch, parents learn how to actively support:
muscle tone balance
joint mobility
early movement patterns
body awareness
Babies themselves are active participants in the process. Through guided movements, they gradually learn important skills such as turning, supporting their head, and eventually preparing for crawling and walking.
Common Developmental Challenges
Many parents come to me because they notice signs that worry them. The most common concerns include:
hypertonicity or hypotonicity (muscles that are too tight or too weak)
delayed ability to hold the head up
asymmetry in body posture
foot positioning issues
neck stiffness
joint or hip concerns
delayed motor development
In many cases, simple daily exercises and massage techniques performed by parents can significantly improve these conditions.
What Parents Learn
During the program, parents learn practical skills they can use at home, including:
foundational infant massage techniques
exercises supporting hip joint development
guided movements that help babies roll onto their stomach
early motor development exercises
techniques for strengthening neck muscles
work with feet, hands, and reflex patterns
The goal is not simply to perform exercises during the session, but to give parents tools they can use regularly in daily life.
Education Beyond the Consultation
After the sessions, parents continue practicing at home.
To support this process, I created a detailed instructional book that explains the techniques step by step. The book includes photographs, explanations, and video materials that help parents review the exercises and continue practicing confidently.
I also share educational content through my YouTube channel, where parents can watch demonstrations and continue learning.
The Broader Impact
When parents understand how to support their baby’s physical development, the benefits extend beyond the family.
Early preventive care can help reduce future medical interventions and associated healthcare costs. In many cases, consistent home exercises can support healthy development without the need for more complex treatments later.
Equally important is the emotional connection that develops between parents and their child. Massage and movement create a powerful form of communication before a child can speak.
Fathers, in particular, often build a deeper connection with their baby through these hands-on interactions.
Looking Forward
My goal is to continue expanding Sasha’s Massage Parents Training Program so more families can access this knowledge.
By teaching parents simple, safe techniques that support infant development, we can help children grow stronger, healthier, and more connected to the people who care for them most.
When parents feel confident and empowered, the benefits extend far beyond the massage session — they shape the foundation of a child’s early life.
